Columbus Trick or Treat

October 20th, 2008

Trick or Treat is again on Halloween in Columbus this year.  For years “Beggars Night” or “Trick or Treat” was NOT on Halloween but was a day or so before depending on what day of the week the “holiday” fell on.

The Columbus Dispatch has a list of most Central Ohio Communities - Central Ohio Halloween 2008

Polaris Area Q2 Bistro

We went to Q2 Bistro an Asian restaurant at Polaris for the first time last Friday. We wondered if Q2 Bistro had just been open a couple of months… business was not booming Friday night but it was about 8:00. Maybe Q2 Bistro had an early dinner crowd.

No grand opening signs… so we guessed Q2 Bistro had been open three months or more… I guess not according to the Columbus Dispatch,  Q2 had their first Anniversary in January 2008.  I read that in the Columbus Dispatch Cantonese cuisine an old-school treat” after eating at Q2.

Q1 is not all Cantonese. I like Cantonese although I started out eating just Hunan and Szechuan food, when I fell in love with Chinese food.   At Q2 Bistro I had Szechuan Shrimp.  It was tasty.  I wish I had paid more attention to the ingredients (vegtables) I might have gone with the Hunan version instead.  My dish was spicy.

The food was gorgeous, if I was a food blogger there’d be images here.  I think my plate was mostly clean before I remembered I could take a photo with my phone.  Duh.  Or maybe I was hungry.  The restaurant is gorgeous.  Very simple and contemporary.

How could I not know the restaurant was there almost two years now?  I don’t eat “Chinese” food much… and the stretch of Polaris Parkway east of Cleveland Avenue is a stretch I seldom travel. Q2 Asian Bistro is at 472 Polaris Parkway, Westerville, Ohio. Phone is 614-898-1988… in case you want to call ahead for a table… or for carry-out.  People came in for carry-out while we were there.

Do we have poverty in Central Ohio?  Are there people who go hungry in Columbus?

The  Mid-Ohio Foodbank is the 11th largest foodbank in the United States.  Mid-Ohio Foodbank serves Central and Eastern Ohio…. their business is up 14% from a year ago.

“Mid-Ohio Foodbank is dedicated to feeding hungry people by collecting and distributing food and grocery products, advocating for hunger-relief programs, and collaborating with others who address basic human needs.”

We can volunteer time, food and money to help feed the hungry people served by the Mid-Ohio Foodbank.  Local restaurants, kitchens and farmers work with the Mid-Ohio Food bank to provide food for hungry people.  Mid_Ohio Foodbank supplies 500 local pantries, soup kitchens, etc. in Central and Eastern Ohio.   Every dollar collected by Mid-Ohio Foodbank allows them to provide $8 dollars in food to local people who need it.  Lots of those hungry people are children.

Mid-Ohio Foodbank is a part of Feeding America,  “the nation’s largest non-governmental, domestic hunger relief organization.”

Mid-Ohio Foodbank is raising funds to move to a larger facility in Grove City.  They have  raised $10 Million of the $16 Million required to make that move.  Mid-Ohio Foodbank is presently on West Mound Street in Columbus.

Today is Blog Action Day.  This years theme is poverty.

Greetings from In “Greetings from …”  in the Columbus Dispatch, the paper has “Postcard-quality photos picture city at its best.”

Columbus Day is a federal holiday.

Columbus Ohio, the largest city named after Christopher Columbus celebrates Columbus Day but here is no Columbus Day Parade…  There has not been a Columbus Day parade in Columbus in years.   The city of Columbus has a wreath laying ceremony this morning… at the statue of Christopher Columbus at City Hall.  Central Ohio celebrates Columbus with Experience Columbus Days.

Whose off work today for Columbus Day in Columbus Ohio?  Your mailman, the garbage men, most government employees…. From my understanding schools are open in Central Ohio with the exception of Columbus State University.

If you are in Columbus and lucky enough to have the day off of work, today is the last day of Experience Columbus Days.  If you are in Columbus and have the day off, you are in for another gorgeous day, how did Experience Columbus and our local weather forecasters arrange the weather for Experience Columbus Days so well.  Experience Columbus

Happy Columbus Day to Columbus Ohio.  Happy Columbus Day from Columbus Ohio.

Columbus Italian Festival

October 12th, 2008

Columbus Italian FestivalOne more day left.  The Columbus Italian Festival runs through 8:00 PM today. The Columbus Italian Festival does not run through Columbus Day, Monday.

The Columbus Italian Festival is at St. John the Baptist Church in Italian Village.  The church address is 720 Hamlet St, Columbus, Ohio.

We went late afternoon Saturday,  great food, great music, great people watching.  The music is not all traditional Italian music or big band music.  We listened to Yumbambé who do “Afro-Cuban Jazz and Salsa” as well as traditional stuff “When the moon hit’s your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore….”

The Columbus Italian parade is 2:00 today and the best local high school band (in the competition)  will be determined.

Experience Columbus Days does run through Monday, Columbus Day.
