Happy Spring Columbus

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

LambIt became spring at 1:48 AM today? Something like that.

Google’s special logo today has flowers in honor of spring.

Searching Google for news of spring brings up a wire story about spring coming too early… the same story… of global warming picked up by lots of papers in honor of spring:

“Early signs of spring cause some to worry

Detroit Free Press, United States - 2 hours ago
Spring airborne pollen is being released about 20 hours earlier every year, according to a Swiss study that looked at common allergies since 1979.
Spring keeps coming earlier in US for birds, bees, trees, sneezes International Herald Tribune”

The Detroit Free Press article is subtitled “Changes tied to global warming threaten nature.”

Columbus got snow yesterday… the last day of winter. Columbus has snow in the forecast for today, the first day of spring… looking forward to the Easter weekend… snow.

St. Patrick’s Day in Columbus

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

There is a parade and the Irish Family Reunion in Columbus Monday.  Both events are hosted by the Shamrock Club of Columbus.  I can’t go to either event because of a commitment.

For me most years celebrating St. Patrick’s Day is cooking a corned beef and cabbage…  and wearing something green.  Or wearing my gorgeous authentic Irish fisherman sweater…  too bad I accidently shrunk it last year.

Why didn’t I look up the directions to unfelt wool earlier? I remember learning the how and why of unfelting wool in a textile science class.

I’m going to try…   “How to unfelt a felted sweater”   Isn’t the internet wonderful?  I am going to try the idea from “bumpinfresh” first before trying “chattering magpies” which involves boiling water.

I have St. Patrick’s Day socks with shamrocks to wear to eat the corned beef and cabbage cooked by someone else this afternoon.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Happy Bissextile Columbus

Happy leap day.

Bissextile means “leap day.”

I had never heard the word… you learn something new every day. I learned the word on ActiveRain (a real estate network) from Pam Winterbauer of San Ramon California.

Leap Year 2008 - Bissextile ?

Pam has all the definitions… 2008 is an “intercalary year”… nothing to do with gender or preference. Just an extra day.

“Calendar quirk gives proud few a bounce” by Kathy Lynn Gray in the Columbus Dispatch gives these benefits for those celebrating a birthday today:

Boston Market restaurants will give anyone with a leap day birthday a free lunch, said Angela Proctor, spokeswoman for the chain.

“We looked up how many people had birthdays that day and decided this is a fun thing to do,” she said.

Papa John’s Pizza is offering a free pizza for birthday folks who order it from www.papajohns.com and pick it up at a local pizzeria.

I believe local McDonalds have a free breakfast burrito… regardless of whether you are a leapling (born on Leap Day) or not.maureen_divider_frog.gif

Happy Valentines Day Columbus

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Columbus skyline with heart trim.In case you missed it my middle name is Rose (it’s in a meme here recently… seven things about me… )

I am not a big fan of roses from the florist but I enjoyed this Squidoo Lens about what each color of roses represent.

Roses: Color Meanings

I am a big fan of roses on bushes… like at the Whetstone Park of Roses in Clintonville… months away but worthy of putting on your calendar now. Buckeye Chuck promised an early spring so this snow and cold should end soon… The Columbus Rose Festival at the Whetstone Park of Roses. The Columbus Rose Festival is traditionally the first weekend in June… I believe. Something to look forward to.

Happy Valentines Day and best wishes from ColumbusBestBlog.com

May you get roses from your sweetheart if that is your thing…

… or chocolates (if you are not on a diet.)

Or a card, a hug or a kiss. Or hearing “I love you.” Or a sweet smile from a friend or a stranger on the snowy streets of Columbus, this Valentines Day 2008.
