Delaware County Suburbs Wealthiest

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

The study is by County.  They don’t break it down by the actual suburb., but the Delaware County suburbs of Columbus are 23rd on the list.

No Central Ohio county made the top ten list.. No Ohio county made the top ten list.  Mostly the top ten list is counties that are suburbs of New York City… the  middle Atlantic (Maryland and Virginia), one California county  and one county in Colorado.

America’s wealthiest suburbs: How 100 counties ranked -Table   from Biz Journal (Columbus Business First. )

Columbus Pet Costume Contest

Buddy in devil costumeDo some canines like to dress up?  My dog Buddy does not like wearing costumes.

The winner Raul an English Bulldog won the Columbus Dispatch’s 2007 Pet Costume Contest, dressed as Henry VIII complete with wives heads (they look like Barbie Doll heads to me. ) Raul’s costume really is creative.

2007 Pet Costume Contest - Slide Show on The Columbus Dispatch website.

The second prize winner, Beau, a French mastiff is wearing my dog Buddy’s Devil costume or similar…probably a lot larger devil costume and Beau wears it well and as the judges noted Beau has the right expression.  This photo is from years ago and although you can not see Buddy’s expression you can see Buddy did not want to dress up as a devil.

This was the best photo of Buddy in costume.  Hardly a photo that will win a dog costume contest.  It is almost impossible to photograph a dog who does not want to wear a costume.  The Humane Society would probably frown on the use of duct tape so we did NOT try it.  The CAHS  Pet Parade is tomorrow at Easton and the Muttster Mash is on Bethel Rd at Fitzgeralds benefitting the Franklin County Dog Shelter.

I thought the ferret dressed as a pirate on the front page of section D of the Columbus Dispatch today was a cat at first. I don’t know personally how easy ferrets are to dress but I know I would not play dress up with a cat now. I did as a kid.  Kittens. puppies, rabbits, my younger brothers, whatever would stay still long enough.

“To Leash or Not To Leash: Dogs at Goodale ParK”

According to a WOSU article there was a meeting last night about Victorian Village dogs having the run of the park without leashes. Possible outcomes:

“One, have a fenced-in dog area within Goodale Park. Two, have designated off-leash areas and times within the park. And three, fence in Wheeler Park, a five acre area located behind Giant Eagle on Neil Avenue, to be used as a dog park.”

Mingle with our Mutts is this Sunday at the Franklin County Dog Shelter (My mutt is from Capital Area Humane Society… lots of opportunities in Columbus.) Mingle is 1st. and 3rd. Sundays each month.

“Obscure” Ohio a Columbus Suburb

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Columbus map with gridA Columbus suburb was in Sundays New York Times ‘This Land’ column.

Is Bexley Ohio an obscure corner of Ohio?  Or a well-known corner?

The New York Times ‘This Land’ column by Dan Barry says:

“Dan Barry takes readers behind news articles and into obscure and well-known corners of the United States. His column appears every Sunday.”

‘This Land’ New York Times Column Sunday September 23, 2007  In “Bringing Hollywood Boulevard to Main Street.”  Bexley Ohio was in the New York Times column Sunday!

“In Bexley, a leafy old suburb of the sprawling capital city of Columbus, everyone plays a role. “

Sunday’s “This Land” column is about the role Jeff Franks and his Drexel Theater play in the east side Columbus suburb.

It’s a great article about the history of the Drexel Theater in Bexley.

Franks and his wife have owned the beautiful art deco theater on Main Street in Bexley for 26 years.  It’s a wonderful story about why Jeff Frank’s grandson calls him “George.”

Drexel Theaters

Thanks to my friend blogger / Realtor® Sandy Mattingly in NYC who brought the column to my attention.  I have to admit I have not been to the Drexel Theater in Bexley in years… outside my regular stomping grounds but the Drexel Theater is a local treasure.

For those outside Central Ohio, Bexley is a gorgeous city on the east side of Columbus.  Bexley is one of the classy “old suburbs” of Columbus.  Other suburb’s  in Central Ohio that are older like Bexley and inside 270 include Grandview Heights, Upper Arlington, Marble Cliff, Riverlea, Minerva Park and  Worthington.   Those communities could also be described as “leafy old suburbs.”

There is a Drexel Theater in Grandview Heights also.

There are also neighborhoods within the City of Columbus as well that have that feel as if you are stuck in ’It’s a Wonderful Life”,  a Shirley Temple movie or the other classic movies of days gone by.
