Move on Ohio

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

OhioOn April 22, 2008 I posted Ohio on the cutting edge…  here about Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann in the limelight… nationally for fighting foreclosures on the home front…

Marc Dann had a “plan.”

A mere three days later Ben Espy’s report about shenanigans in the Ohio AG’s office came out? Trouble in the AG’s office…  No one in Ohio can miss Marc Dann being in the spotlight now.   The Democratic party (his own) wants to impeach Dann because he will not step down.

I am not very political…

Jill Miller Zimon is.

Jill Miller Zimon  of Cleveland Ohio who writes ‘Writes Like She Talks’ wrote about “Scurrying Signals Canton Rethoughtful Editorial on Embattled Ohio AG Marc Dann”

“Although this morning’s Canton Repository editorial doesn’t say anything about the sexism, its tenor captures the scurrying of signals that Marc Dann’s neural pathways must be trying to manage right now. With great emphasis on how the desperation is a result of his own actions.”

The Canton Repository article is entitled “Lawyer in Dann finally prevails.”  Dann  is going to step down?  Avoid impeachment?

Someone tell me that someone in Dann’s office is still paying attention to “the plan.”   That someone is working “the Plan.”

The plan? The US News & World Report’s article was Luke  Mullin’s interview of Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann, who orchestrated “the plan.”  “The plan” is  How Ohio is Tackling the Foreclosure Crisis.  Ohio is using lawyers to fight foreclosures in Ohio.  Or was.  Someone tell me the “embattled” (as Jill Miller Zimon rightfully refers to Dann) Attorney General has staff who are not busy with impeachment, packing up shop and politics and are still working  “the plan.”

shhhhh “Sex in the City”

Columbus skyline as a postcardI don’t read Men’s Health Magazine. The Men’s Health Magazine website has “tons of useful stuff” (it says so.) Men’s Health Magazine is just not my kind of magazine for obvious reasons but if I EVER need to remind myself what 6 pack abs look like, I’m glad to have the link to their website. I am not sure if the list of cities with Columbus being “one of the most sexually satisfied” cities in the nation is just in the magazine or if it is there somewhere on the Magazine’s website.

The sad news as reported by The Other Paper? The sad news is that Columbus is only number two… to Indianapolis. Columbus will just have to try harder.

I do read The Other Paper, “Sex in the City” by Lyndsey Teter is the April 24, 2008 cover story. Entertaining story if you like ‘The Other Paper.’ If you don’t like The Other Paper by all means move along… don’t read it… do not click on the link.

I love the local comments about the Men’s Health Magazine list and how unscientific it is (births, prophylactics, toy buying is the basic formula used by the magazine to determine satisfaction with sex as a city as I understand it, from The Other Paper.) The quote I love the most is from Senate Minority Leader Ray Miller:

“And if we don’t want to attract, you know, perverts from bordering states, I don’t think that this should be discussed publicly.”

Sorry. No wonder Mayor Coleman avoided commenting for “The Other Paper.”

Columbus has made lists in that magazine before for being the fattest city…

Columbus Clippers 2008

baseballThe Columbus Clippers home opener is Thursday… buy tickets for this year’s home opener and next years first game at the new ball park… Thursday, April 3 @  7:05 PM vs.  Charlotte Knights.

Look for details about “Cooper Stadium/Huntington Park Opening Night Double Plays!” on the website:

Columbus Clippers

As an added bonus… there’s a “Victory Bell Giveaway (Giveaway to the first 2,000 fans)”  the bell is cute…

Last year on ColumbusBestBlog.com “By George, it’s a new ballgame in Columbus” said:

According to an editorial review for Columbus Clippers written by John Oklok on City Search The Columbus Clipper is “One of Columbus’ Best”

“Nominated for Best Family Fun because a quality attraction that’s suitable for all ages and easily affordable covers all the bases.”

And the really good news from Oklok’s review?

Name That Missing Tune

“Cowbell activity has declined. The “Ring Your Bell” song, which used to play nearly every half-inning, is now seldom heard”

Ohio Severe Weather

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

weatherThis week is severe weather awareness week in Ohio. This morning is the state tornado drill, scheduled for 9:50 A.M.

Some weather maps put Ohio on the eastern edge of ‘Tornado Alley’ others don’t seem to think we are part of Tornado Alley. The National Weather Service places Ohio on the eastern edge of “tornado alley,” listing an average of 16 tornadoes per year in addition to hundreds of severe thunderstorms. “

Ohio’s best known tornado was in Xenia Ohio on Easter Sunday, April 3, 1974.

Of course lots of our severe storms are not tornadoes. Parts of Ohio were recently in the news for flooding. We had a record snow fall just over two weeks ago in Columbus. We have a variety of severe weather in Ohio.

Did you know that OSU has a new weather website? Twister. My interest in weather stems in part from taking a meteorology class in college.

The Twister site forecast for today says:

“Columbus Forecast

Not as blustery with sunny intervals. High 52. Thickening clouds with rain likely by dawn on Thursday, particularly south of Columbus. Low 34. “

Listen for the tornado sirens this morning… “this is a test. It’s only a test.” They will probably be going off for real in a few weeks. Mostly in the evenings… we’ll be going into that familiar weather pattern with warm humid days, pop up showers in the late afternoon or evening… and occasional severe weather and tornado watches…

Your hometown Columbus…

Monday, March 10th, 2008

US MapIn “How’s the economy in your hometown?” in USA Today, the Columbus Metropolitan Area gets a green dot for “Expansion.” The state of Ohio as a whole is  “At Risk” of recession according to the interactive map, so shows up on the US maps as yellow.   The legend on the map shows the green states (and metroplitan areas click on a state and it shows you cities.)

In housing the state was basically flat “Ohio -0.4%” (this is home value) for last year. The article breaks out state economies by tourism, motor vehicle production, exports and agriculture as well as housing. Using motor vehicle production for 2006 Ohio is fourth on the list titled:

“Top 10 states with motor vehicle production as highest percentage of gross state product in 2006″

Neighboring Michigan is of course one of the states shown in red for recession on the interactive map… The USA Today article says the states that were in recession at the beginning of 2008, California, Nevada, Arizona, Florida and Michigan account for 25% of the US total economic output.

Thanks to Allan Young’s Incoherence  for the heads up about the USA Today article.
