‘Clintonville and Beechwold’

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Clintonville sign‘Clintonville and Beechwold’ will be published in early 2009 by Clintonville resident Shirley Hyatt.  The book will be published by Arcadia Press in their Images of America series in January 2009.

Mrs. Hyatt has a blog too, the blog Clintonville History is not the same content as the book. The blog, Clintonville History has content she couldn’t fit into the book.  I’ve added a link to her blog in my blogroll here on ColumbusBestBlog.com

Arcadia Publishing describes the book  Clintonville and Beechwold

“Clintonville, a Columbus neighborhood situated four miles north of the Ohio Statehouse, began as a sleepy crossroads halfway between Columbus and Worthington. Beechwold, three more miles north, was a farm, then a zoo. Today they are bedroom communities but no longer sleepy. The beauty of their grassy knolls, springs, river, and wooded ravines inspired the creation of one of Ohio’s best amusement parks, which in turn spurred housing and businesses. The City of Columbus marched right alongside this progress, annexing residential areas almost as soon as they were developed. This new compilation tells, through images and words, the story of Clintonville and Beechwold as they evolved from sleepy hamlets to the communities they are today.”

Hyatt’s blog has lots of old photos.  I first read it on my cell phone and was frustrated at reading the descriptions and not being able to see all the old photos.  Lots of pictures of buildings and people from long ago…

Just a few of the things I learned about Clintonville and Beechwold history in just one afternoon reading Clintonville History (the blog) include:

There was a flood in Clintonville in January 1959.  The area affected spanned all the way from Arcadia (?) to Southington (in Riverlea? that’s a lot of flooding!)

The Underground Railroad went through Clintonville

There were six ravines in Clintonville but are now only four. Hyatt says “perhaps there were six”

Polaris Area Q2 Bistro

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Adapted from Wikipedia's OH county maps by Catbar.Image via Wikipedia

We went to Q2 Bistro an Asian restaurant at Polaris for the first time last Friday. We wondered if Q2 Bistro had just been open a couple of months… business was not booming Friday night but it was about 8:00. Maybe Q2 Bistro had an early dinner crowd.

No grand opening signs… so we guessed Q2 Bistro had been open three months or more… I guess not according to the Columbus Dispatch,  Q2 had their first Anniversary in January 2008.  I read that in the Columbus Dispatch Cantonese cuisine an old-school treat” after eating at Q2.

Q1 is not all Cantonese. I like Cantonese although I started out eating just Hunan and Szechuan food, when I fell in love with Chinese food.   At Q2 Bistro I had Szechuan Shrimp.  It was tasty.  I wish I had paid more attention to the ingredients (vegtables) I might have gone with the Hunan version instead.  My dish was spicy.

The food was gorgeous, if I was a food blogger there’d be images here.  I think my plate was mostly clean before I remembered I could take a photo with my phone.  Duh.  Or maybe I was hungry.  The restaurant is gorgeous.  Very simple and contemporary.

How could I not know the restaurant was there almost two years now?  I don’t eat “Chinese” food much… and the stretch of Polaris Parkway east of Cleveland Avenue is a stretch I seldom travel. Q2 Asian Bistro is at 472 Polaris Parkway, Westerville, Ohio. Phone is 614-898-1988… in case you want to call ahead for a table… or for carry-out.  People came in for carry-out while we were there.

Columbus Italian Festival

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

Columbus Italian FestivalOne more day left.  The Columbus Italian Festival runs through 8:00 PM today. The Columbus Italian Festival does not run through Columbus Day, Monday.

The Columbus Italian Festival is at St. John the Baptist Church in Italian Village.  The church address is 720 Hamlet St, Columbus, Ohio.

We went late afternoon Saturday,  great food, great music, great people watching.  The music is not all traditional Italian music or big band music.  We listened to Yumbambé who do “Afro-Cuban Jazz and Salsa” as well as traditional stuff “When the moon hit’s your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore….”

The Columbus Italian parade is 2:00 today and the best local high school band (in the competition)  will be determined.

Experience Columbus Days does run through Monday, Columbus Day.

Polaris area colorful roofs

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

roofs with tarps 2 weeks after the wind storm - Polaris CrossingDriving through the intersection of Lazelle Rd and Sancus Rd this morning a friend pointed out the roof’s at Polaris Crossing ( an *apartment complex which rents furnished apartments on a monthly basis) just south of the south west corner.    Coming back through I had to stop and shoot photos of the colorful green and blue tarps on the roofs.  Remnants of the remnants of Ike coming through Central Ohio on September 14, 2008.    Almost every roof at the rental community seems to have a tarp and you can see evidence of shingles that were torn off by the winds in that historic storm.

Bad roofs?  Bad roofing?  The condominium community just south of Polaris Crossing, Carriage Oaks looked to have roofs intact.. but we saw one condo building with damage.  Driving into  Worthington Highlands (a single family residential neighborhood) there were a few homes with tarps on their roofs.

I am not that great a photographer and it is just my phone’s camera and it is a gray day… (rain?)

I do not work with apartment rentals.

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

In Central Ohio mostly city of Columbus neighborhoods.. are participating in the National Night Out very little in the North Outer-Belt area… from NBC4i I can’t see what the second marker in the Sharon Township / Worthington area (north of 270, along Route 23) is.
