2008 Columbus Best Mexican Restaurant

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Reading a note at Chile Verde Cafe last night, they are in the competition for the best Mexican Restaurant in town. “Vote now” was the gist of the message… or maybe it was “Vote for us now.”

I found the CityGuide (AOL) poll and voted this morning, but not for Chile Verde. It was the second time we’d eaten there in less than a month. Chile Verde Cafe was just OK.

My favorite Columbus Mexican restaurant is on the list, so I voted for them.

City’s BEST - 21 Days Left to Vote!

Look at the photo of Chile Verde Cafe… we sat in the very last booth (sat in the second to last booth a few weeks ago on a Saturday night…) The mirror on the wall is supposed to be vertical the design is a crescent moon and the moons are lying on their backs because it is hung horizontally to fit the wall. In a Columbus Alive article same booth is photographed (it is a small restaurant) I digress…

The food was OK. We talked last night about “Chile Verde is not what it used to be…. ” but it is OK. I had a salad. The salsa was OK… needs more cilantro for me. The lime in the Diet Pepsi was superb. It is often hard to get a lime in authentic Mexican restaurants… I’ll blog about that someday.

Chile Verde Cafe is in the Carriage Place shopping Center on the corner of Bethel and Sawmill Roads, 4852 Sawmill Rd, Columbus, Ohio. If they’ve got a website I can’t find it in the jumble of restaurant reviews, city guides, etc. If I had a link I’d give it to you….

Who else is on the AOL.com BEST Poll (no relation to ColumbusBestBlog.com)?

My favorite… Hacienda Real on Sinclair Road.  Hacienda Real has one of the lowest scores. Las Margarita’s on Frantz Road in the Dublin  lots of people rave about it… we visited the Las Magarita’s in Westerville… not fans…  Also on the BEST list to vote for, Talita’s on N. High Street in Columbus (Clintonville) but Talita’s moved to G-r-o-v-e C-i-t-y earlier this year…. their website says: “THANK YOU CLINTONVILLE FOR 39 YEARS.”

Columbus Best Indian Food Store

Happy 5th Birthday to Spice World. Spice World is at 1111 Worthington Woods Boulevard, Columbus, OH 43085

The mall at the corner of Worthington Woods and Worthington Galena Road is one of the ugliest strip malls in Central Ohio IMHO.

I stopped in recently  to look at the price of rice. While I was there I checked to see if I could find my favorite dish, which I think of as green goo but “saag paneer?” came to mind. The man working at the store, said “curried spinach?” and showed me to the panak paneer. Good stuff whatever it is called.

Looking for a recipe I found a “Show Me the Curry” series on YouTube. Cumin Basmati Rice - Show Me the Curry!

I eat more rice with the prepared foods from Spice World… because it is spicier than what I would order in the restaurant (mild) and spicier than the prepared Indian food I can find at Kroger’s.

We’ll always have White Castle…

burgerHappy Hamburger Day Columbus.

Visit a Wendy’s or a Max and Erma’s today? There are plenty of local locations of those formerly Central Ohio based companies…

Or are you up for a slider? Is White Castle now Columbus Ohio’s only locally based hamburger chain?

I heard on Twitter today from a real estate agent in Virginia @sarahstelmok that it is Hamburger Day. I have not verified that information but I think, I’ll grab a burger anyway.

Cuco’s Taqueria - 2162 W. Henderson Ave. Columbus Ohio - Map

I went, I ate, I enjoyed… hey I still have my leftovers in the refrigerator. I could enjoy some more. I had a combination plate that was a beef enchilada and a chile relleno. I have at least half of the huge chile relleno left.

They have black beans on the menu (as well as refritos.) I thought they tasted like black beans… my dining companion who shall remain nameless (”you don’t blog about me, do you?”) thought they tasted bland… (like black beans???) We are bean connoisseurs.

I have a phone with a camera. Did I even think of snapping photos? No.

Cuco’s Taquieria is at 2162 W. Henderson. A reader on one of my blogs… here? Or Discover Columbus recommended Cuco’s.

The good news Cuco’s website has photos!

The bad news the Cuco’s Taquieria’s website has music. Is that the Mexican hat dance? It opened very slowly for me, I believe because of the music. Then the music blared and scared me.

More good news… there is a coupon on the Cuco’s Taqueria website. “Buy one entree get the second at 50% off… restrictions apply, days, equal or lesser value…, limited time offer, the usual.”

Their website… you’ve been warned about the music. Cuco’s Taqueria

The Cuco’s website says:

“Cuco’s Taqueria offers authentic Mexican cuisine in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Established in 2002 and family-owned, Cuco’s has become a favorite destination for Columbus area Mexican food lovers. Our executive chef is a native of Guadalajara, Mexico and his specialties include Guadalajara Lamb Stew, mojarra frita, chile rellenos and chicken enchiladas. Visit us and you, too, will discover ‘the best kept secret in Columbus’!

“Why High Gas Prices are a Good Thing”

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Is there a silver lining to high gas prices? Gas prices are high nationally… the title, “Why High Gas Prices are a Good Thing”here is a quote of Idaho real estate agent George Tallabas.

“Less and less people are eating out in restaurants and actually cooking at home and having more family meals. Imagine that novelty! Can that be bad?”

Yeah it can be… if the economy is why little Timmy and Suzie are eating at home since their dad lost his job as a chef at a Central Ohio restaurant that can be awful. What about the restaurant busboys and waitresses and their families? They’re going to be eating at home too. Or NOT eating at home, without income to feed themselves and their families.

I’m all for looking at the bright side… I hope we all start conserving gas. I hope this country becomes innovative when it comes to energy. George T’s last point in his post on ActiveRain a real estate network is…

We have become a more compassionate society. I have seen church groups and other private organizations raising money for the elderly and less fortunate that have been hurt by the rising cost of goods and services.

Do the compassionate church groups have room at the table for Timmy, Suzie and their family and the busboys and waitresses too? Maybe Idaho is different than Ohio. Maybe the businesses that have boomed there the cooks, busboys and waitresses don’t really need the income, they are just working in the restaurant as kind of a hobby…I might be wrong but I think most of the people in Central Ohio restaurants are schlepping plates, slinging hash and bussing tables because they have to.

This morning on NBC … on one of the early, early morning shows they said McDonald’s business is up because of the economy. Good for McDonald’s… that could help the pharmaceutical and medical industries too!!

We went out to eat Saturday night at Anatolia Cafe. We got the second to last table in the place (have you been there? … it is dinky we moved our table over so the couple who got the last table did not get hit with the kitchen door.) The (owner?) said “Good Bye” and told us to come back soon. I hope it won’t be as long (we have not been there in a couple of years) because the food is excellent.

Across the street on the corner of Worthington Woods and Worthington - Galena? A McDonald’s… I am not anti McDonald’s… I grabbed breakfast at the “Mickey D’s” on the corner of Worthington Woods and Worthington - Galena that very morning… hand me a cholesterol pill.
