Reds ecard Real Living

A Twit tweet from Cinci? Or Dayton? @DanielJohnsonjr lives in Cinci works in Dayton and may have been commuting this morning when he tweeted:

Good morning, Cincinnati! Who’s taking off for Opening Day? Reds vs Diamondbacks 2 PM EDT

In response to my question about the weather outlook for  southwest Ohio today @DanielJohnson tweeted:

@MaureenMcCabe spotty showers this afternoon, high of 64 F for Opening Day in Cincinnati. Alas, I’ll be in Dayton.

Are you on Twitter? Are you headed to Cincinnati for Opening Day?

Ohio Severe Weather

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

weatherThis week is severe weather awareness week in Ohio. This morning is the state tornado drill, scheduled for 9:50 A.M.

Some weather maps put Ohio on the eastern edge of ‘Tornado Alley’ others don’t seem to think we are part of Tornado Alley. The National Weather Service places Ohio on the eastern edge of “tornado alley,” listing an average of 16 tornadoes per year in addition to hundreds of severe thunderstorms. “

Ohio’s best known tornado was in Xenia Ohio on Easter Sunday, April 3, 1974.

Of course lots of our severe storms are not tornadoes. Parts of Ohio were recently in the news for flooding. We had a record snow fall just over two weeks ago in Columbus. We have a variety of severe weather in Ohio.

Did you know that OSU has a new weather website? Twister. My interest in weather stems in part from taking a meteorology class in college.

The Twister site forecast for today says:

“Columbus Forecast

Not as blustery with sunny intervals. High 52. Thickening clouds with rain likely by dawn on Thursday, particularly south of Columbus. Low 34. “

Listen for the tornado sirens this morning… “this is a test. It’s only a test.” They will probably be going off for real in a few weeks. Mostly in the evenings… we’ll be going into that familiar weather pattern with warm humid days, pop up showers in the late afternoon or evening… and occasional severe weather and tornado watches…

Happy Easter Central Ohio

Easter eCard from Real; Living

This is a Real Living eCard.

Why is Easter so early in 2008? How is the date of Easter set? We started talking about it late last night. I know I have looked it up before but couldn’t explain it coming home from Easter vigil last night. It was midnight, I was tired, I know I have looked it up before but I was “stupid tired.”

Why is Easter so early this year? Karen Moorehead a real estate blogger in Michigan wrote about how the date for Easter  is set. Karen wrote of Ann Arbor:

” Christians of all faiths are wondering this question this year and it is especially true in tree town where we got 8.5? of snow on Friday night and we are expecting more today!”

Happy Easter Columbus. We are lucky our snow was so light yesterday and that our record snow from two weeks ago is gone, gone, all gone.

It’s math, it’s astronomy, it’s religion Christian and Judaism that sets the calendar for Easter each year.

Happy Easter Columbus.

Happy Spring Columbus

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

LambIt became spring at 1:48 AM today? Something like that.

Google’s special logo today has flowers in honor of spring.

Searching Google for news of spring brings up a wire story about spring coming too early… the same story… of global warming picked up by lots of papers in honor of spring:

“Early signs of spring cause some to worry

Detroit Free Press, United States - 2 hours ago
Spring airborne pollen is being released about 20 hours earlier every year, according to a Swiss study that looked at common allergies since 1979.
Spring keeps coming earlier in US for birds, bees, trees, sneezes International Herald Tribune
Global Warming Rushes Timing of Spring The Associated Press

The Detroit Free Press article is subtitled “Changes tied to global warming threaten nature.”

Columbus got snow yesterday… the last day of winter. Columbus has snow in the forecast for today, the first day of spring… looking forward to the Easter weekend… snow.
