Happy Bissextile Columbus

Happy leap day.

Bissextile means “leap day.”

I had never heard the word… you learn something new every day. I learned the word on ActiveRain (a real estate network) from Pam Winterbauer of San Ramon California.

Leap Year 2008 - Bissextile ?

Pam has all the definitions… 2008 is an “intercalary year”… nothing to do with gender or preference. Just an extra day.

“Calendar quirk gives proud few a bounce” by Kathy Lynn Gray in the Columbus Dispatch gives these benefits for those celebrating a birthday today:

Boston Market restaurants will give anyone with a leap day birthday a free lunch, said Angela Proctor, spokeswoman for the chain.

“We looked up how many people had birthdays that day and decided this is a fun thing to do,” she said.

Papa John’s Pizza is offering a free pizza for birthday folks who order it from www.papajohns.com and pick it up at a local pizzeria.

I believe local McDonalds have a free breakfast burrito… regardless of whether you are a leapling (born on Leap Day) or not.maureen_divider_frog.gif

Mayor of Columbus Ohio 43235

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Seth Godin started it. I am not that political… I would never run for public office but Seth Marketing Guru Godin said I (and all Realtors) could be the mayor of a local ZIP code by doing a page (lens) on Squidoo. So I did one.

I am the mayor of Columbus Ohio 43085

I am the mayor of Columbus 43085… on Squidoo anyway. Not to be confused with being the mayor of Worthington 43085. Worthington really does have a mayor… Columbus does too of course, just not a mayor for each ZIP code. Mayor Michael Coleman is the mayor of all the ZIP codes in Columbus Ohio…

What does being a mayor on Squidoo mean? Restaurants… a catchy question, a sports team.. and stats. Being the mayor of a ZIP code means sharing the weather according to Squidoo.

Click for Columbus, Ohio Forecast”

Above is the weather for 43235… I was actually kind of trying to find a weather widget that breaks it down to ZIP code. I pulled this weather widget up using the 43235 ZIP code, so I am disappointed that it says Columbus Ohio but maybe it is not just 43235, maybe it is a bunch of ZIP codes.

For anyone who cares… 43235 is the West Worthington ZIP code. It was part of the 43085 ZIP code until the late 80’s I believe. The post office is on Nicholas Rd, south of 161 (Linworth area) where the cows are…

Parts of the 43235 ZIP are in the Worthington, Dublin or Columbus school districts. It can be confusing.

I wish I could do a Google map of the 43235 ZIP code area to embed here. Squidoo uses a Google map… doesn’t show you outlines of the boundaries… This site uses a Google.

ZIP code map - Feed in 43235 and it will give you the shape of a ZIP and the surrounding ZIP codes. Then it tells you:

“The USPS considers zip codes to be delivery routes instead of areas. There may be differences between this depiction and actual zip code mailing address.”

Stats from ZipSkinny.com for the 43235 ZIP code:

Columbus Dilemma

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

It’s a Catholic dilemma according to CNN.   “St. Patrick’s Day causing Catholic dilemma” says:

“COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — That famous saint named Patrick will have his green-drenched party this year, but it’s unclear when the guests are supposed to arrive.

For the first time since 1940, St. Patrick’s Day will fall during Holy Week, the sacred seven days preceding Easter.

Because of the overlap, liturgical rules dictate that no Mass in honor of the saint can be celebrated on Monday, March 17, according to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

But a few Roman Catholic leaders are asking for even more moderation in their dioceses: They want parades and other festivities kept out of Holy Week as well.”

The CNN article about St. Patrick’s Day lays out how various US cities dealt with the fact that St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, is during Holy Week this year.  Some cities moved their St. Patrick’s Day festivities forward.  Other cities are “doing it” on March 17, despite the fact that it is Holy Week for the Christian faith, including Catholics.

Meredith Heagney of the Columbus Dispatch wrote about St. Patrick’s Day 2008 plans in Central Ohio back in January:

”Calendar throws St. Patrick’s Day for loop”

The Columbus Shamrock Club’s Parade and Irish Family Reunion will be held on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2008.  Some Catholic groups and individuals will not participate in the Columbus parade, including The Royal Hibernians.   Bishop Campbell of the local Catholic Diocese had asked last fall that the date of the parade and celebrations in Columbus be moved to a date outside Holy Week, according to the Columbus Dispatch article.

It does not seem like that big a “dilemma” to me.  Or maybe Columbus is lucky to have Dublin Ohio and their parade the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day to celebrate… Those to whom celebrating St. Patrick’s Day means drinking green beer will probably not notice a big difference in 2008.  Those who want to drink green beer can do so from the 15th through the 17th… they can not drink green beer and go to a St. Patrick’s Day mass in Central Ohio though…

The Shamrock Club of Columbus site (not a Catholic organization but has many Catholic members) says:

“Friday, March 7th we’ll be celebrating the Feast of St. Patrick at St. Christopher’s Church with continued activities that include a visit to City Hall and Painting of the Shamrock’s at Broad 7 High at 12 noon.

Slainte’

Mark Dempsey, President”

One of the people quoted in the CNN article is Mike Cronin, co-author of  “The Wearing of the Green: History of St. Patrick’s Day”   (the book priced at 19.50 on the Amazon site… only 8.50 on this site… or is the 19.50 something other than US dollars?) who said:

“The U.S. remains one of the few countries in the world to retain any religious traces of St. Patrick’s Day, Cronin said. In Ireland, where the government sponsors the Dublin parade, the holiday has morphed into an arts festival that draws millions of people, he said.

Recognizing that, bishops there have moved the feast of the nation’s patron saint to March 15 this year. March 17 will remain an official Irish day off work and the Dublin parade will go on as scheduled.

Had Ireland’s bishops shown the same insistence as some of their American counterparts, Cronin said, their comments almost certainly would have been ignored.

“It’d be like the (American) bishops arguing to move Super Bowl Sunday,” he said.”

The same AP story on MSNBC is “Irish dilemma: St. Patrick’s Day vs. Holy Week”

St. Patrick’s Day 2160 is the next time St. Patrick’s Day will fall in Holy Week…

Westerville - Las Margaritas

706 N. State St. Westerville Ohio 43082

We finally visited the Westerville Las Margaritas in the ice and snow last night… and I was disappointed.

Maybe it was the anticipation of hearing from so many people how great Las Margaritas is…

Maybe because it was a Friday in Lent so we were looking for something on the menu without meat…

Maybe it is a matter of personal taste…

The chips were blah. The salsa was bland.

Las Margarita’s chile relleno is battered so I could not try it…

My vegetarian enchiladas were ok…

I brought my charra beans home. I tasted them… Maybe after I eat the charra beans I will have changed my mind…

We’ll go back and try Las Margaritas again. We’ll give it a second chance.

Central Ohio Couple Wins 3.1 million dollar suit

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Speaking of affordable housing a Licking County couple won their lawsuit against a local builder.  The Cosners sued the builder in Franklin County because the builder is based in Franklin County. The home is in the Reynoldsburg area.

Due to water intrusion problems with the home, the home and all the families possesions were  covered in mold.

The Columbus Dispatch said :

“The list of problems included a defective foundation, an undersized heating and air-conditioning system, leaking plumbing and buckling roof shingles.”

Sadly the Cosner family is not likely to see the money awarded by the jury anytime soon… both the Columbus Dipatch and the Channel 10 News said the builder will likely appeal.

Channel 10 TV News  website said:

“But there is more than just one allegation against Maronda. The company has been the focus of 10 Investigates stories in the past for alleged deceptive practices and shoddy work, Aker reported.

Aker is a Channel 10 reporter. The TV station article online goes on:

The Ohio Attorney General’s Office confirmed that 52 complaints have been filed against Maronda in the past five years. “
