Columbus Landmarks Foundation Announces New Director

Friday, August 31st, 2007

brickThe new executive director of the Columbus Landmarks Foundation is Kathy Mast Kane according to Columbus Business First. Kate Matheny who was the executive director of the Columbus Landmarks Foundation resigned in January 2007.

The Columbus Business First article says:

“Kane has been involved with local preservation efforts for more than 25 years through the National Trust for Historical Preservation, the Ohio Historic Preservation Office, the Ohio Historical Society and several other organizations. ”

City Hop is a big Columbus Landmarks Foundation project.  I love Columbus Landmark Foundations’ Christmas tours of historic downtown Columbus churches.  I have got to see churches and architecture I never would have had an opportunity to see otherwise.

The Columbus Landmarks Foundation also has spooky Halloween tours of Central Ohio locations…  I have never got to go to one… yet.

Sculpture of the Innis sisters at the Sister’s GardenOf course COSI is for kids (but lots of adults love it too.) Of course the Columbus Zoo is for kids….

The Sisters’ Garden is a garden for children at Inniswood Metro Gardens  in Westerville.   There are gardens within gardens within gardens at this Metropark.    It says ‘To Nurture the Nature of the Child in Everyone” on a brochure available at the Sisters’ Garden.

The seven gardens within the Sisters’ Garden include the Entry Garden where the sculpture of Mary and Grace Innis as children pictured above is.

The Country Garden includes Granny’s House and Bessie’s Barn. I can hardly believe I did not photograph those for the slide show below but the windmill and the water tower are part of the Country Garden.

A lot of the photos in the slide show below are of the Wetland Garden, including a photo of the summer of 2007 sculpture installation, BIG BUGS  which is at Inniswood Metro Gardens through October 14, 2007.  The Big Bug  sculptures by David Rogers  are scattered throughout the park, the Dragonfly lighted in a pond in the Wetland Garden within the Sisters’ Garden.

Other gardens within the nerly three acre Sisters’ Garden include:

Woodland Garden - tree, lots of them

Turtle Mound - a landform

Story Maze - Grandfather Tree,  a Native American legend and a maze!

 Circle Maze - Sky Woman

Trellis Cave - Ohio limestone, fossils

Secret Garden… I’d tell you but it’s a secret…

Ohio State Season Starts…

OSU eCardYes, it’s Labor Day weekend.

Yes there is a lot to do in Central Ohio this weekend.  Lots, but for some the biggie even if school (OSU)  is not in session and they’re “just” playing Youngstown is the start of the foot ball season at the Horse Shoes.

Really there’s lots going on in Central Ohio (Greater Columbus … my list includes events in Sunbury, the east side,  downtown Columbus)  this weekend.  I  used to do “events” on Discover Columbus most Thursdays.  Central Ohio Labor Day Weekend   went up this morning.  I absolutely hate doing those entries anymore.  I think I skipped it last weekend (there was not much going on… an excuse?? )  I probably have only done them twice a month…. lately.

Football.  The Columbus sports blogs have everything you always wanted to know about Ohio State football … all I know is they play Youngstown, the games at noon and to  avoid doing anything in the OSU area on Saturday….. The game is not on network TV.

I have a number of the Columbus sports blogs in my blogroll.  The game is on Insight, not on Time Warner cable network???  Or have they been able to come to an agreement with the ‘Big Ten?’

In “Hello Columbus: Big Ten Wins” in the Capital Times (Madison WI)  UW-Madison (my alma mater…) professor of telecommunications,   Barry Orton says:

“The only big news is Columbus and they had to cave there or they’d lose all their subscribers. They had not a lot of leverage and not a lot of choice.”

I don’t have cable, I am not a big sports fan… Is Time Warner Cable bigger in Columbus than Insight?  That’s who I had cable from when I had cable… long long ago.

I’ll find something to do in Columbus.
