“Stray Cats Overrun German Village”

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

Channel 4 News had a story about stray cats and the “TNR” program a local group is doing. I missed it on TV but found this on the web. There is a video.

“Stray cats over run German Village”

The title of the article sounded funny but it is really a scary story about how fast those felines can reproduce. I talked to someone about T.N.R. (trap, neuter and release) a few years ago at the Worthington Pooch Parade (T.N.R. for felines, not canines.) I get it kind of.

From NBC news:

“One female cat can have three litters a year at an average of four kittens per litter,” Jeanne Tranter, a representative of Save the Wild Side, said. “It’s going to add up pretty quickly.”

In addition, a kitten can breed after only six months.”

Want a cat? Adopt a local adult cat from the Capital Area Humane Society for only $30, neutered (spayed), microchipped, shots. I believe it is a limited time offer; July 5th to the 8th. I have contact info for CAHS on my website MaureenMcCabe.com

Caesar, pictured above was a Columbus street cat. He lived on the west side (?) until a good Samaritan took him to CAHS. As an itty bitty kitty Caesar lived on the streets of Central Ohio from fall 2005 to early 2006. I’m glad someone took him to the Capital Area Humane Society.

What was the 4th of July like in 1857? Ed Lentz ‘As it were’ column in This Week Community Newspapers is called City changes; 4th of July doesn’t It’s about celebrating Independence Day in Columbus and across the river in Franklinton way back then. History of Columbus!

Opportunities to step back in time for July 2007:

Glorious Fourth: Independence Day Celebration, Ohio Historical Center/Ohio Village - July 04, 2007 - From the Ohio Historical Center / Ohio Village calendar:

“July 4 Glorious Fourth: Independence Day Celebration Ohio Village, COLUMBUS Noon-5 p.m.
Enjoy a leisurely afternoon of family activities to celebrate the nation’s independence, including a grand procession, patriotic speeches, a greased pole contest, a concert by the Ohio Village Singers and a community dance. Throughout the afternoon, families can enjoy period games, an Ohio Village Muffins base ball game, tug-of-war and a pie-eating contest. Another fun part of the day will include popular elements of “Delicious Dish: The Cold, Hard Facts about Ice Cream.” Taste unique ice cream flavors, treat yourself to a sundae, help make homemade ice cream and learn about the unique history of ice cream. Ohio Village Muffins Vintage Baseball Game - July 04, 2007 2:00 PM - Ohio Historical Center/Ohio Village

The Ohio Village Muffins are from the 1860’s? Or recreate the 1860’s? According to the Wikipedia entry on the Ohio Village Muffins it was called “base ball” back then.

One of my favorite Ed Lentz columns about Columbus history inspired Circus Town Columbus.

Columbus is on Santas’ Short List

Friday, June 29th, 2007

Santa Claus

Gosh I hope I have my grammar straight Santas’ not Santa’s…. it’s a group of Santas that have a list of cities they are considering holding their 2008 convention in. “He’s making a list, checking it twice…. “ sounds like Columbus was very, very nice to the visiting Santas who are checking out cities.

Red nosed reindeer greeted the group as Experience Columbus showed the naturally bearded Santas around town. The Santas’ story is in a Columbus Dispatch story written by Marla Matzer Rose.

Send an email to Santa win a trip to the Short North Pole

“Send an e-mail to Santa by midnight on July 4 and tell him why you want the Amalgamated Order of Real Bearded Santas (AORBS) to come to Columbus for their convention in 2008 and march in the Red, White and Boom! parade. “
