Happy Cinco de Mayo Central Ohio

From Channel 10 TV’s Commit to be Fit eNewsletter:

“5 Best, 5 Worst Mexican Meals”

This was written by By Susan Burke MS, RD, LD/N, CDE eDiets Contributor I could not find a link to the original. Commit to be Fit does not provide one, maybe it is members only, here is eDiets website.

“The 5 Worst Mexican Meals”

Chips
Nachos
Quesadillas
Refried beans with anything
Shredded cheese

“5 Best Mexican Meals”

Tacos
Soups
Arroz dishes
Fajitas
Burrito Bowl

Phrases like “Skip the guacamole and sour cream” and “Say “No” to the heavy condiments, like shredded cheese and sour cream” pepper Burke’s list even on the 5 Best Mexican meals.

Burke says of tacos:

“At Baja Fresh, the Original Baja Taco is simply your choice of charbroiled chicken, steak, shrimp or pork in a grilled corn tortilla with onions, cilantro and salsa. Only 220 calories; you can order “dos, por favor”!

Baja Fresh was one of my favorite restaurants and I should make it down to the Baja Fresh on Bethel Rd or the one on Sawmill more often. There was one in Worthington a block from my office and one at Polaris. I used to do the Baja Fresh beans and rice diet a lot.

When Discover Columbus (my first blog) was called Columbus Best Blog I did a list of my favorite Mexican Restaurants.

My numero uno La Hacienda Real on Sinclair Rd. I bet the chile relleno I had last night at La Hacienda Real would be off the meter bad according to Burke. And she’s right. Filled with cheese, encased in an egg (like an omelette) then covered with cheese. I have to learn to “Say “No” to the heavy condiments, like shredded cheese ….”

Central Ohio “Clean Air Fair”

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

May 09, 2007 the 2007 Clean Air Fair will be at the Arena District in Columbus at Battelle Plaza

According to Expeereince Columbus it is Wednesday, May 9th, 11am - 1pm at Battelle Plaza (at the corner of Nationwide Blvd and Front St.) The 2007 Clean Air Awards will be awarded.

The MORPC (Mid Ohio Regional Planning Committee?) site says:

“Central Ohio’s Air Pollution Problem
You may be suprised to learn that Central Ohio does in fact have an air pollution problem. On April 15, 2004, the U.S. EPA designated our region nonattainment for failing to meet minimum air quality standards for ozone. “

I was. I remember ozone days from summer 2006 but I was still surprised to see Columbus ranked as an F grade right along with Los Angeles according to the American Lung Association.

Banned in Ohio

Friday, May 4th, 2007

No Smoking public smoking… The Health Department thought the statewide smoking ban could be enforced by the end of April the last time I wrote about the public smoking ban here.

Close… enforcement started on May 3, 2007 according to many, many, many sources in Ohio:

Akron - Fire lit under smoking ban by Tracy Wheeler, the Beacon Journal medical writer

Cincinnati - This time for real: No smoking

Cleveland - The ban begins according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Dayton - State ready to show teeth behind its ban on smoking according to Anthony Gottschlich Staff Writer. I can tell by the article that Dayton did not have a ban before the statewide ban. I would not have expected them to.

Columbus - State to start penalizing for smoking in public places according to Business First Columbus

We have not had smoking in public in most of Central Ohio in a year… or more. I wonder about Cleveland, Cincinnati, Akron, Toledo, Youngstown, Zanesville and the rest of the state, whether other cities had a ban. What interested me Googling the story was how many papers in the tobacco producing states carried the story. It was news in Kentucky, West Virginia, and North Carolina. I saw an Indiana paper, that carried the story of Ohio enforcing the smoking ban but not a lot of other papers in the midwest or elsewhere…carried the news story.

I worked with people moving from California in 2001 and 2002 who were shocked by public smoking and how many people in Central Ohio still smoked.

“She’s a Brick House”

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

brick Remember Teri Lussier? Teri of Huber Heights Ohio brought us (all three of the readers of ColumbusBestBlog.com and me ) news of the hot topic of adult entertainment at the Ohio Statehouse on her blog TheBrickRanch.com The adult entertainment is not at the Statehouse in Columbus, they are just legislating about adult entertainment at the Ohio Statehouse. Or not legislating about it. And actually Teri was just laughing about bagels being donated to the Mid-Ohio FoodBank in Columbus by a Dayton strip club owner to keep the conservatives from eating bagels.

Bagels for Columbus Mid-Ohio FoodBank!

Columbus Dispatch reporter Candy Candisky gives the details:

There would be no bagels.

Not for conservatives trying to do away with lap dances at strip clubs, anyway.
