Columbus map with grid

Business First Columbus says:

The Greater Columbus area saw its population grow 7 percent from April 2000 to July 2006, the U.S. Census Bureau said.

In a report released Thursday, the bureau said Columbus - growing to 1.72 million from 1.61 million - ranked 32nd in largest numerical gain in population among the nation’s 361 metropolitan areas.

The article goes on to say that Cinci had a 4.7% increase and is the only other Ohio City on the list of growing cities. With 2.1 million people now the Cincinnati area is ranked 41st on the list (largest numerical gain in population of 361 metropolitan areas.)

Still the Cincinnati Post took Cincinnati’s growth as a negative.

It could be worse, according to the Business First Columbus article Cleveland made #2 on the list for cities losing population:

“Cleveland with 34,000 fewer residents. ”

Ouch!

Speaking about this region the Chicago Tribune cleverly said of the Census Bureau statistics:

“Rust for the weary”

“Parts of the Rust Belt had large declines. The Pittsburgh, Pa., metro area led the way, losing 60,000 people from 2000 to 2006. Its population loss was followed by declines in Cleveland, Buffalo, Youngstown, Ohio, and Scranton, Pa.”

Not in Central Ohio? This gets confused. The City of Columbus is the largest city in Ohio. The Cleveland and Cincinnati metro areas are both larger than the Columbus metropolitan area. The census stats are metro areas.

Best Burger in Ohio and beyond….

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

burgerGoing un-gourmet for the summer (it’s almost here… it’s snowing on the daffodils now but summer is on it’s way) Lisa at Restaurant Widow is looking for the best burgers… in Ohio and beyond… not chain restaurant burgers… Lisa’s got standards.. visit Lisa’s site and let her know where she and her husband can get a great burger….

Me I have no taste. I am addicted to hamburger chains. You can confess White Castle cravings to me and I won’t bat an eye. Although I am not a fan…. if this was Discover Columbus I’d post a poll… Wendy’s, White Castle, McDonalds or Burger King etc. …

It’s Restaurant Widows second birthday too. Seems mature for two. Great recap of what’s been accomplished in the past year. Happy Birthday Restaurant Widow… keep blogging Lisa.

Columbus Ohio Hot Market?

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Columbus skyline as a postcard

According to Forbes.com Columbus is the second hottest market in the country? Or was the second hottest market in the 4th quarter of 2006 anyway.

2. Columbus, Ohio
Median sales price Q4 2006: $103,500
Median sales price Q4 2005: $89,900
Gain: 15.1%

huh?

Why didn’t it feel hot? The number one city on Forbes list was Tulsa Oklahoma with a 17% increase in median price for 4th quarter.

I seldom pay attention to median prices. I pay attention to the average price… what do I know? Median is just the middle price isn’t it? I always think of median prices being quoted in markets that are overpriced to make them sound more reasonable. I thought the average price would give a truer picture?

Dayton is also on Forbes 10 Hottest Market’s list. Higher median prices in the fourth quarter of 2006 over 2005.

Who made the 10 Coldest Markets? Cleveland and Cincinnati… The ten markets with the largest decreases in median prices in the fourth quarter of 2006 over same time frame 2005.

Ah ha! It’s all coming back to me now… Trulia Heat Maps. I wrote about Trulia’s Heat Maps back when the report came out…. I wrote about the Trends which mentioned Columbus on Discover Columbus.
I wrote about both Trulia Reports …Trends and Heat Maps on my evil stepblog on Active Rain. I thought trends was where people were looking on Trulia….

Trulia breaks Columbus out by neighborhood…. and we are talking Columbus here not greater Columbus… are we even talking homes in the City of Columbus in suburban districts?

The area mapped is just the Columbus schools I believe, not the parts of the City of Columbus that are in the Dublin, Hilliard, Worthington, South-Western City School districts, etc. OK… rereading this Trulia decided what is Columbus by zip codes. What the map shows as Columbus is part of the City of Columbus and The City of Grandview Heights. Garbled.

Where do you live?

People who live in the City of Columbus and the Westerville School District but have a Gahanna mailing address are gonna love Trulia… Or the City of Columbus residents who live in the Worthington School District but have a Powell mailing address..there are lots of people who live in Columbus but are not represented by that Trulia map…. if you live in Central Ohio but just aren’t sure how to explain where you live advances in mapping and the proliferation of real estate info on the internet is going to make it more confusing for a bit.

Cleveland Indians ecard Real LivingReds ecard Real Living My city of Delaware puppy pal Sadie announces the beginning of baseball season for Toby on Sadie’s Take on Delaware Ohio today. What a dog!

“Spring is Here! It’s Baseball Time Again”

Oh I guess it is Toby not Sadie: “April 2nd, 2007 by Toby Boyce”

Toby is a big baseball fan… Sadie probably knows as much about baseball as I do, although I bet I have been to more Reds and Indians games than Sadie.

Today is the beginning of baseball huh?
